Myrtle Beach RoadTrip Travel and Leisure would like to send out a big CONGRATULATIONS to the University of South Carolina Gamecocks on winning the 2010 NCAA College Baseball World Series.
The Gamecocks and the UCLA Bruins went down the wire, with USC plating the winning run on a Brady Thomas single in the 12th inning.
South Carolina lost its CWS opener 4-3 to the Oklahoma Sooners, then knocked out No. 1 seed Arizona State on Tuesday before winning again Thursday. Then they beat in state rival Clemson twice to reach the best-of-three championship round against UCLA.

The 2010 Midsummer Classic in Myrtle Beach will mark the second consecutive All-Star Game on the Carolina League cycle that the Pelicans will be hosting. Myrtle Beach hosted the 2008 Carolina League-California League All-Star Game, which was regarded as one of the best in event history. A crowd of 6,599, still tied for the largest in BB&T Coastal Field history, packed the ballpark for the 2008 event, which featured numerous top Major League prospects, including current big leaguers, Pablo Sandoval (San Francisco Giants) and Matt Wieters (Baltimore Orioles).
California won the 2009 event when Jon Gaston homered leading off the bottom of the 10th inning to give the West Coast squad a 2-1 victory in the California/Carolina League All-Star Game.

Who would’ve thunk? That the best collegiate baseball team in the nation would be from right here in the Myrtle Beach area.
Well baseball “sports fans”, it’s true. The Coastal Carolina University Chanticleers, a Division I collegiate baseball team, just won their 42nd game this year and are ranked 4th in the nation. This takes their season record to 42-6 and 20-0 in the Big South Conference.
40 wins is no fluke season, the Chanticleers have won at least 40 games in a season nine out of the last ten seasons. The 2005, 2007 and 2008 season saw the Chanticleers win 50 games. This baseball team is for real.

The CCU Chanticleers Baseball team beat the College of Charleston twice this past week to advance to the NCAA Super Regionals. Coastal will play a best-of-three series against in-state University of South Carolina for a chance to advance to the NCAA College World Series. The Gamecocks will visit BB&T Coastal Field this weekend.
The fourth seeded Chants lead the nation with a 55-8 record. Coastal junior Rico Noel was name Tournament MVP.

Professional baseball came to Myrtle Beach in 1999, when the Atlanta Braves picked Myrtle Beach to host their Class A Advanced affiliate member of the Carolina League. With a beautiful new stadium, adoring fans, the backing of “America’s Team” the Atlanta Braves and a town that was just itching for a winner, the Pelican’s were a natural fit.
BB&T Coastal Field is a beautiful natural grass stadium with seating for 5,200 fans and can be expanded to house 6,000 fans. The ballpark is conveniently located in Myrtle Beach on 21st Avenue North, just across the street from Broadway at the Beach.
The Pelicans did not disappoint their first year. Advancing all the way to the League Championship, only to be denied the opportunity by mother nature. Hurricane Floyd abruptly ending the 1999 season with the Pelicans being crowned Co-Champions. Several noteable players emerged from that first year’s team. 2B Marcus Giles won the league MVP award and also led the Carolina league in batting average (.326), hits (162) and doubles (40). SS Rafael Furcal amazed the Pelican faithful by hitting over .400 for the first month that he played in Myrtle Beach. Furcal won a promotion in 2000 to “the show” and promptly won Rookie Of The Year.

The stadium is within easy walking distance from Broadway at the Beach, and the Courtyard Marriott Broadway.
